The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) engaged UniversalPegasus International (UPI) to prepare a report analyzing hydrogen blending into natural gas distribution systems in Alberta to supplement the AUC’s report to the Minister of Energy. The AUC posted UPI’s report on public record for informational purposes.
Responses have been submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC)’s hydrogen inquiry. The hydrogen inquiry is broadly aimed at gathering information on the technical requirements and economic viability of blending hydrogen in natural gas distribution systems.
The Commission released its final report on the distribution system inquiry addressing the complexity surrounding the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into Alberta’s electric distribution system. DERs are defined as any technology connected to the distribution grid that affects the supply, demand, or storage of electricity.
This update is part of a series of updates regarding the distribution system inquiry initiated by the AUC.
The Commission initiated Distribution Inquiry Proceeding (ID 24116) Modules 2 and 3 are currently underway and focus on how the different technologies presented and discussed in Module One can connect to the distribution system. Readers may recall earlier industry updates discussing Module One.
The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) initiated a distribution system inquiry application in December 2018 in response to the rise of more efficient resources and technologies that have the potential to significantly affect the electric distribution market[1].
AltaLink Management Ltd. (AltaLink) has applied to the Alberta Utilities Commission (the Commission) requesting for the initiation of a generic proceeding to review distribution system planning criteria. In Proceeding 25188, the Commission will review the submission by AltaLink as well as any registered participants and decide on whether it is necessary to hold such an inquiry[1].
